Crabbers Crack Record Opening Prices for Dungeness as Season Opens on West Coast

Dungeness crab fishermen are excited for the first paychecks of the season: In posts on Facebook, blogs and news sites, the ex-vessel prices appear to be between $4.50 and $5 per pound on the West Coast.

This year's season is the first one in seven years to open on the traditional Dec. 1 start date in Northern California, Oregon and Washington. The season in Central California remains closed due to the presence of whales.

This Week in Retail: Jingle Bells, December Sells

December has arrived and retailers have been proactively preparing for what could be a record-breaking season for holiday spending.

The National Retail Federation predicts the highest holiday retail sales on record this year. According to the NRF's forecast, holiday sales during November and December could grow between $843.4 billion and $859 billion. This compares with a previous high of $777.3 billion in 2020.

Bering Sea Fishermen Press Council on Halibut Bycatch

After years of deliberations, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council is inching toward a decision on whether to tie halibut bycatch limits in the Bering Sea to abundance indices.

The action, known formally as Bering Sea-Aleutian Islands halibut abundancebased management, or ABM, is intended to reduce bycatch of halibut in the Bering Sea by the Amendment 80 trawl fleet when the fish stocks are lower. Noway-based salmon farming giant Mowi was ranked the most sustainable protein producer for the third year in a row on Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index, the company announced on December 1.

The report is now in its fourth edition and assesses over 60 largest global meat, dairy and aquaculture companies on ten environmental, social and governance themes aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Industry, Biologist at Odds Over Whether Closure of Fish Farms Affected Sea-Lice Levels

The B.C. Salmon Farmers Association is citing a new report on sea lice in its latest volley against open-net-pen opponents, as the federal deadline approaches to close all Discovery Islands fish farms by the end of June.

Fish Net Recycling in Alaska Tops 1 Million Pounds

Over one million pounds of old fishing nets and lines from Alaska have made it to recycling markets so far where they are remade into plastic pellets and fibers.

The milestone was reached with a recent haul of nets from Dutch Harbor and more are already adding to the total. Shipping vans filled with old gear collected at Haines were offloaded in Seattle last week and another container from Cordova is on its way...

The outlook for tuna farming in Port Lincoln post COVID-19 downturn is positive, according to evidence given to a Parliamentary Inquiry into the aquaculture industry.

Aquaculture industry groups from South Australia and Tasmania and an environmental peak body appeared before the House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee on Friday, November 26, as part of its inquiry into Australia's aquaculture sector.

France Wants EU to Intervene in Fishing Row With UK if Talks Fail - Senior Diplomat

EU member states should work out common measures against the United Kingdom if its negotiations with France over post-Brexit fishing rights produce no results before December 10, French Secretary of State for European Affairs Clement Beaune said on Wednesday.

On Monday, France set December 10 as the final deadline for the settlement of the fisheries dispute after which Beaune said it would quit the talks.

Russia Ready to Increase Crab Catch and its Exports Next Year

Russia continues to increase crab catch and its exports this year amid maintaining stable demand for it both in the domestic market and abroad.

According to the Russian Kommersant business paper, citing the All-Russian Association of Fisheries, in January-August 2021, Russia exported 38,100 tonnes of crab for US$866 million. That was almost 1.7 times higher compared to the same period of last year.

Walmart CEO says Biden Supply Chain Push is Easing Bottlenecks

Walmart Inc Chief Executive Doug McMillon on Monday hailed the Biden administration's efforts to ease supply chain bottlenecks as the holiday season gets underway, noting the decision to extend port hours was having a positive impact on the flow of goods.

Vietnamese Shrimp Exports to China Decline Deeply

Shrimp exports in October 2021 were nearly equal to the export value of the same period last year with US$425.3 million, down only slightly by 1.5%. However, export turnover to the Chinese market still fell deeply.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in October 2021, among the main import markets, shrimp exports to the US, EU, and Korean markets all increased, but exports to China continued to decrease.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) highlighted how a routine fishery officer inspection led to hefty fines for one British Columbia commercial fisherman.

On July 2, Garry Dean Stoner was sentenced in Terrace Provincial Court, pleading guilty to 12 counts under the Fisheries Act for violations that occurred between June-September 2017 and July-August 2018 in waters north of Haida Gwaii.

Mowi-Owned Northern Harvest Sea Farms Reports Mortality Event at Newfoundland Salmon Site

Northern Harvest Sea Farms (NHSF) reported an abnormal mortality event at its Deep Water Point site on November 30.

The Mowi subsidiary shared that the suspected cause of the mortalities was a combination of sea lice pressure, treatments and prolonged rough weather at the farm.

The site, Marine Site AQ# 1080 has about 709,000 Atlantic salmon being raised and mortality exceeded 10%, leading to the public notice. The fish at the site weigh about 1.1 kilograms.

Oyster Harvesting Closed in St. Mary's County; Second Time in Weeks State Shuts Operation

For the second time in less than a month, state environmental regulators have shut down shellfish harvesting near St. George Island in St. Mary's County after a sewage spill.

The Maryland Department of the Environment announced Monday evening that it closed 180 acres of the Potomac River after a sewage overflow over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Fishing Vessel's Narrow Miss of Collision with a Cargo Ship Results in USCG Citation

In the same week Dungeness crabbers could start pulling their pots, a commercial fishing vessel was cited for navigation negligence near the Columbia River on the West Coast.

The number of young people becoming fishers is booming, which is good news for the industry.

Coast Guard: Plan to Move Grounded Trawler Off Truro in the Works

A plan to salvage a 78-foot shrimp trawler that ran aground Tuesday near Highland Light was in the works Wednesday, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Briana Carter.

The Coast Guard and Truro police received a report of the grounding early Tuesday.

Five people were aboard the boat, and there were no reported injuries, Carter said.

Support for Kiribati Switch on Marine Sanctuary

An oceans' expert is supportive of the Kiribati Government's for its plan to open the Phoenix Island Protected Area, or the PIPA, to commercial fishing.

Part of the justification for the PIPA being established was to protect spawning grounds for tuna.

Lummi Nation Declares Disaster After Invasive Crab Arrives

The Lummi Indian Business Council has passed a resolution declaring a disaster after more than 70,000 European green crab — an invasive species — were captured and removed from the Lummi Sea Pond in recent months.

The Tribe cultivates shellfish and juvenile salmon in the 750-acre sea pond surrounded by the most productive natural shellfish beds on the reservation. Most Canadian Aquaculture Fisheries Exempted From U.S. Whale Watchlist

Most Canadian aquaculture operations have been exempted from a new United States rule requiring that seafood imports prove they do not harm whales, seals and other marine mammals.

Starting in 2023, all seafood entering the U.S. that hasn't been granted an exemption will have to demonstrate it is harvested with protections equivalent to those used in American fisheries — a so-called comparability finding now required under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Rising Inflation, Relentless Pandemic Dampen U.S. Consumer Confidence

U.S. consumer confidence dropped to a nine-month low in November amid worries about the rising cost of living and pandemic fatigue, but that did not change expectations for stronger economic growth this quarter.

Environmentalists Question British Columbia Fish Farm Applications

Environmental groups are questioning applications by salmon farmers in B.C. that would expand operations outside of the Discovery Islands, where salmon farms are to be phased out by 2022.

There are currently 12 applications in to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, one of which is for a new salmon farm site located between the Discovery Islands and Broughton Archipelago.

Tasmanian Farmed Salmon Alliance Backs Salmon

Truck drivers, factory workers and business bigshots gathered on Tuesday to form a new coalition of pro-salmon-farming advocates.

The newly formed Tasmanian Farmed Salmon Alliance gathered in Margate over a barbecue of salmon fillet, salmon burgers, and salmon sashimi.
